CERAMIC DENTAL VENEERS: IMPROVING THE AESTHETICS OF THE SMILE IS POSSIBLE

Porcelain or ceramic veneers are the ideal solution for many aesthetic problems and the ideal formula to return to show off a nice smile. Through ceramic veneers, imperfections in the tooth enamel are eliminated, allowing the teeth to be visually more uniform.

Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic sheets that are adhered to the surface of the tooth. Generally, they replace the visible face of the tooth, achieving important improvements in its position, color, and shape, with minimal tooth wear. They improve the smile’s aesthetics in dark, worn, stained, crooked, or separated teeth.

Porcelain veneers can last up to 15 years, with minimal tooth grinding. In addition, they stand out for their adhesion power, wear resistance, and great sense of aesthetics. The same color and shine will always be maintained. It is a completely biocompatible material with high compression resistance that, thanks to its appearance so similar to enamel, makes it a perfect option for reconstructions and improvements in our dental pieces. Ceramic veneers are very comfortable and once placed, you can immediately lead a normal life (talking, eating, brushing your teeth…). You will not notice, nor will they notice, that you are wearing them.

Types of Ceramic Veneers

Diversity of porcelain veneers for dental aesthetics

Porcelain veneers, key elements in aesthetic dentistry, are classified into three types, each with distinctive characteristics:

  • Ultrafine: These are considered the best on the current market, standing out for their thinness and resistance.
  • Lumineer veneers: As an ultra-thin variant, the Lumineers are another standout option. Their popularity makes them in demand by patients seeking high-quality and aesthetic results. Its application adapts to various aesthetic needs.
  • Zirconium Veneers: Reserved for specific situations, these veneers are used when the patient has an irremovable metal bolt. The mixture of porcelain and zirconium guarantees resistance, although they can be thicker and more opaque. They are the optimal choice when a metal bolt must be hidden without affecting aesthetics.

The choice of a porcelain veneer will depend on the aesthetic and functional needs of the patient. Professional guidance is required. At Clínica Curull we opt for ultra-thin veneers, as they are the ones that have the most natural appearance.

Ceramic Veneer treatments

The porcelain veneer placement procedure consists of four stages:

1. Aesthetic analysis and study model

In the first session, the specialist meets with the patient to carry out a detailed analysis of the dental parameters. The necessary treatment is agreed upon during this initial consultation. During this visit, the necessary records are taken to make a good diagnosis and treatment plan: x-rays, intra- and extraoral photos, scanner, and videos that reflect the patient’s movements when speaking and smiling… With all these parameters, we perform a Digital Analysis of the Patient’s smile (DSD Digital Smile Design).

2. Mockup

Based on the DSD performed in the first visit, the specialist creates a mockup or model that is captured in a photo or directly in the patient’s mouth and provides an approximate view of the treatment result. This allows you to visualize the final shape of the teeth before proceeding.

3. Teeth preparation

The preparation of the teeth is carried out, by taking a digital mold that will serve as a base for the porcelain veneers. In this phase, minimal carving is done on the external face of the tooth to correct imperfections. Temporary veneers are placed during the final manufacturing process to protect the teeth.

4. Cementation of definitive veneers

After between 7 and 15 days, and already in the last phase of the treatment, the provisional veneers are removed, and the definitive veneers are cemented. This step completes the treatment, leaving the patient with an improved and aesthetically pleasing smile.

Advantages of Ceramic Veneers

Porcelain veneers offer numerous advantages for those who choose this aesthetic treatment:

  • Minimum maintenance: They generally require no additional maintenance beyond daily oral hygiene, simplifying care for the patient.
  • Personalization: With a wide range of options, veneers are highly customizable. Different shapes and shades can be chosen to meet the patient’s aesthetic needs.
  • Durability: Compared to other options, porcelain veneers are remarkably durable. While composite ones can last around 5 years, porcelain ones can last up to 10 or 15 years with proper care, and even more…
  • Compatibility with other treatments: They can be easily combined with other previous dental treatments, such as orthodontics or whitening, to achieve aesthetic and functional results.
  • Toughness: Porcelain has a higher level of hardness than natural enamel, providing exceptional durability. They maintain the shine and color of the teeth indefinitely.
  • Less invasive treatment: This treatment is minimally invasive, without causing pain or discomfort to the patient during its application.
  • Stain resistance: Unlike other treatments, porcelain veneers are not stained with substances such as tobacco, coffee, or tea, maintaining their original appearance.
  • Naturalness: Porcelain gives veneers an appearance indistinguishable from natural teeth. Its bond to tooth enamel is strong, achieving an impeccable aesthetic result.

Successful stories

“My teeth are badly worn, I can’t drink food or drinks that are cold”

The case that we want to share with you is that of a 64-year-old patient who presented dental wear due to bruxism. As we have already shared in previous cases, bruxism is the unconscious action of grinding or clenching the teeth intensely. More and more people suffer from this ailment, which is considered the reflection of nervous tension in the teeth and the mouth.

Frequent Questions

When is it indicated to use ceramic veneers?

Normally, they are made to correct aesthetic and positional errors, including malpositions, stains, fractures, diastemas (spaces between teeth), size correction, wear, etc. Ceramic has such an aesthetic appearance that it perfectly imitates a natural tooth and its appearance does not deteriorate with use or over the years. Come and ask us if veneers are a good solution for your smile, or we can advise you on other alternatives. Not all patients are indicated to receive this treatment.

Will I be able to eat everything if I wear ceramic veneers?

Thanks to the very good adhesion to the enamel, we can fully trust in the durability of this treatment. From the first day of placement you can lead a normal life (brushing, talking, eating everything…). Our Dental Aesthetics specialist will give you a series of recommendations for its proper use and maintenance.

Is it a treatment that requires many visits?

Absolutely. Once the Digital Design of your Smile has been completed, in a first appointment the teeth to be treated are minimally prepared and after 10-15 days, in a second appointment the veneers will be placed. The duration of these appointments varies depending on the number of teeth to be treated. After 15 days, we have a third review appointment to check that the patient has adapted to his new teeth.

Does it hurt to get ceramic veneers?

No. At Clínica Curull we use a minimally invasive procedure to reduce discomfort during and after our veneer treatments. We offer all indications and post-treatment care advice. However, if at any time the patient experiences persistent or unusual pain, it is crucial to contact the dentist so that any issues can be addressed immediately.
